‘Buddha’ on Loan to new restaurant Umi Nom in Brooklyn, New York

Umi Nom -433 De Kalb Ave.-Brooklyn -718.789.8806

I am pleased to announce that the owner of New York Vintner’s Shane Benson, who is also owner of “Buddha’,  has put the painting on view at Chef King Phojanakong’s newest restaurant, Umi Nom in Brooklyn, New York. I have always been a big fan of Chef King, especially his Lower East Side restaurant Kuma Inn and as an artist its great to be associated with a talent such as his. Here is a little something about the man and his achievements:

Chef King received his formal culinary education from the esteemed Culinary Institute of America, and graduated in 1998.

Chef King went on to train under Daniel Boulud at Restaurant Daniel and David Bouley at Bouley Bakery and the Danube where he sharpened his classical training and knowledge of the craft. Other New York kitchens where Chef King has worked include: Jean-Georges, The Grocery, and Cendrillon. He was co-executive chef at Beekman Kitchen in New York and executive chef at Fatapples in El Cerrito, California before venturing on his own.

In May of 2003, the chef opened Kuma Inn on the second floor of a Lower East Side tenement in New York. Chef King brings all his experiences together, including the flavors he grew up with, to the community dining style from the Philippines, his education with some of the world’s best chefs, and exposure to the freshest ingredients to offer a unique dining experience. Within the first year, Kuma Inn was rated “one of the city’s best places to eat 2004” by New York Magazine. The New York Times wrote, “It is Filipino mama food and fantastic.” King has received numerous accolades from various premier publications.

Another restaurant is in the works which promises to continue taking diners to new and exciting culinary heights.

The restaurant ‘in the works’ is called Umi Nom and is now open in Brooklyn and receiving great reviews. If you are in the city, stop by for a great meal and to view ‘Buddha” in person … and say hello to Chef King!  Thanks to everyone who discovered the painting on their own and sent in emails and comments. Checkout Umi Nom’s public fanpage for more information.

New York to England …. and now onto France!

A couple of weeks ago we arrived in the small & very picturesque village of Collioure, in the south west of France, with one suitcase, one backpack and one laptop each. We’re going to stay here for a while. Jason’s studio is now within the walls of a creaky and characterful 18th century fisherman’s cottage, rather than a drafty 20th century garage in Norfolk … there’s nothing like changing the backdrop once in a while! Still, with art supplies at hand and an internet connection its business as usual.

Jason painted this series of five birds during 2006 when we were living in our 25th floor apartment in NYC. This is the first time they have been made available for sale. From our window you could look down on the birds flying and this always struck a chord with me … usually one is looking up at the birds. I liked these paintings on paper straight away; the simplicity of the line work, color and flatness of the images still managed to capture movement, flight and freedom … the very essence of what it is to be a bird.

Second only to the Brooklyn Bridge, Tower Bridge in London is the bridge I have crossed the most by foot. Whenever Sophie and I drop into London we take the same circular walk….Waterloo Station, steps down to the river, left at the London Eye, some expert weaving through a sea of people, a brief stroll along the Thames, then up the steps to Westminster Bridge (now that I think about it I’ve crossed that bridge multiple times too). Once over the bridge, its on towards Embankment and the inevitable stop at Gordon’s Wine Bar. Then it’s a slower stroll towards Tower Bridge, crossing over, briefly stopping to admire the view, then down to the Thames path again for more strolling and expert weaving, past The Clink Prison (at which I always proclaim “So that’s where the term ‘throw ‘em in the clink’ comes from”) – more strolling and finally to Tate Modern, lift/elevator straight to the top for a fine view of St. Paul’s (and the sea of cranes scattered around the city’s construction projects – tons of cranes in London!)

As for the appeal of Tower Bridge … I like its easily recognizable silhouette, it makes for an iconic image. In my mind the image of Tower Bridge screams London long before it screams bridge. All of the metaphors and quotes about bridges seem to be about moving forward and not looking back. But in my life this particular bridge and painting reminds me of walking for miles and miles in a circle, alongside Sophie.

Maybe it’s that paradox which compelled me to paint it.

The principal owner of NY Vintners has been collecting my paintings since 2001 and up until now the bulk of his collection has been on private display in his home. Currently a selection of recently acquired paintings in addition to a couple paintings dating back to 2001 are on permanent display at NY Vintners wine shop/Event space. Along with a Monopoly print 2001 (a few of the edition of 50 are still available for purchase) NYV is displaying: Budda 2009, Birdsss 2009, Chair 2003, Eiffel Tower 2007, and Telephone 2004.

NY Vintners is located at 21 Warren st. (Tribeca, NYC) Near City Hall off Broadway. NYV operates a succesful online business along with their architecturally stunning Shop/Event Space…The entire location is modular and can be converted via floor tracks into an enormous space able to entertain 100’s of people with a full open view restaurant sized kitchen in the back. It really has to be seen in person, I have not come across any place like it in NYC or elsewhere. Stop in to say hello check out the wine and the art. NYV has grown to become a world class operation you should investigate. Wine expertise and great events, become a fan on Facebook and stay on top of all the happenings in the world of wine.
